What is Edge Computing?

An open IT distributed architecture, processing decentralized processing power, enabling technologies involved in IOT and mobile computing is known as edge computing.Gartner quotes edge computing as “a part of a distributed computing topology in which information processing is located close to the edge – where things and people produce or consume that information.”

Now the question is how is data processed?

Well, the data is processed by the device itself or may involve a local computer and server, inspite of being transmitted to a data center.

In this world, full of advanced technology, what is the importance of edge computing?

Well Edge computing has a huge amount of technical importance in today’s generation. Some of these include enabling data stream acceleration, real time data processing efficiently, allowing smart applications and devices to instantaneously respond while being created.Technologies involved in Self driving cars use such type of technologies.Apart from that,it allows large amount of data being processed near the source, efficiently, and also by reducing bandwidth usage. Its unique ability to process data without involving any public cloud platform serves as an important security for handy and important data.

Working of Edge Computing-

Edge computing involves location. It puts storage and server at the location of the data.Sometimes, little above partial rack of gea is needed to operate on remote LAN,for local collection and procession of data.Mostly in hardened enclosures, computing gear is deployed for protection against conditions of temperature, moisture, etc.

Need For Edge Computing-Different suitable architectures are require in different computing tasks.Edge computing having viable and important architecture, supports distributed computing to deploy storage resources in same physical location as data source.Edge computing provides efficient solution to problems like moving vast amounts of data consumed and produced by today’s firms.Edge along with fog computing addresses three principal network drawbacks-bandwidth,latency and congestion.Latency and congestion can be made negligible by deploying servers and storage at the location of data source where edge computing can operate devices involving smaller and efficient LAN,ample bandwith being used by local data generating devives.

Benefits of Edge Computing-

Speed – By reducing latency, edge computing reduces latency.Procession of data closer to the data source reduces physical distance, thereby reducing latency as well.Instead of microseconds, speeds are measured in miliseconds for end users due to its enormous high speed.

Security – Edge computing reduces the amount of data at risk by processing data on local devices inspite of transmitting it back to main data source.Even after incorporating specialized edge data centres, additional security measures are provided to guard against dreadful cyberattacks and threats.
